Members of the University and College Union, which represents 120,000 lecturers, will discuss whether to continue links with Israeli institutions in the light of what they call the "humanitarian catastrophe imposed on Gaza" at the union's annual conference in Manchester later this month.

Sally Hunt, the UCU general secretary, said: "There is no call for a boycott; the motions to congress call for a wider debate about what is happening over there."

A spokesman for Stop the Boycott said they were seeking legal advice.
