Green Party of Seattle Endorses Initiative 97 -- Seattle Divest from War and Occupation

At its April general membership meeting, the Green Party of Seattle voted almost unanimously to endorse Seattle ballot initiative 97, titled Seattle Divest from War and Occupation.

If adopted by Seattle voters, this initiative would restrict the City of Seattle Employees' Retirement Fund from investing in companies that directly participate in, or directly profit from, the U.S. occupation of Iraq.

Investment will also be prohibited in corporations that provide material support for Israeli government activities, or do business within Israeli settlements, in territory taken by Israel in the 1967 Arab-Israeli war. The City will also be required to withdraw retirement fund investments in Israeli government bonds if Israel attacks Iran without U.N. authorization.

Green Party of Seattle also committed to collecting a minimum of 1000 signatures, of the 18,000 or so that is needed for this initiative to be placed on the ballot.
